Two Steps, One Sticker: Texas registration, inspection stickers to be combined

New state rule combines registration and inspection stickers

HOUSTON – A new state rule that combines registration and inspection stickers into one sticker goes into effect March 1.

An inspection will be a requirement for registering your car, so one sticker will cover both. The state will electronically verify your inspection is current, just like they do with car insurance before issuing a registration sticker. State officials say this is designed to cut down on fake inspections and improve air quality.

If your inspection is current this year when your registration expires, you will just re-register. After March 2016, when your expiration date comes up, you will have 90 days to get an inspection before renewing your registration.

The state has created a website explaining the new program. There is also a calculator where you can put the current expiration dates of both of your tags and get instructions on what you will need to do to comply with the new law.
