FRIENDSWOOD, Texas – Two men were caught installing a credit card skimming device on a pump at a Friendswood gas station, police said.

An off-duty Friendswood police officer said Monday morning he noticed 18-year-old Hector Lorenzo Batista and 21-year-old Raul Alberto La Rosa Martinez acting suspiciously at the Smart Stop gas station on Farm To Market Road 2351.

Police said he alerted a marked Friendswood police unit, which stopped the suspects after they left the gas station.

While searching the suspects’ car, police said they found drug paraphernalia, a laptop computer, various types of computer-style wiring and burglary tools. One of the suspects also had keys that unlocked the gas pumps, police said.

When the store manager arrived, police removed the skimming device.

Batista and Martinez both face felony charges of unlawful use of a criminal instrument for installing the device in order to capture credit card numbers of gas station customers.

Bail was set at $2,000 each.
