Two killed in crash during police chase in NE Houston, police say

HOUSTON – Two people are dead after a police chase ended in a fiery crash in northeast Houston.

Officials said around 2 a.m. on Interstate 45 at Crosstimbers, an HPD unit attempted to stop a pickup truck that ran through two red lights at a high rate of speed.

Officials said the driver did not stop and led them on a high-speed chase.

Police said the driver traveled south on I-45 to Interstate 610 North Loop, then east on the North Loop and exited for the feeder road at Irvington.

According to police, the driver did not notice the road had a sharp curve and he lost control of the vehicle, slamming into a concrete pillar. The truck went up in flames and the driver and another man in the vehicle died inside the truck.

Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner said the two men have not been identified and an investigation is underway.

"People think that (of) our jobs, (that) sometimes we're just machines, we're not, we're human beings. We have families just like everybody else," Finner said. "I also want to say something to the families, and we haven't identified the individuals, we know that they have families as well so we're praying for the officer and we're praying for the suspects' families as well."

Finner said that HPD's psych services is on the scene  to help the officer involved.
