UPDATE: Man charged in flashlight beating death

Victim's name has not been released by authorities

HOUSTON – A man has been charged with murder for beating another man to death with a flashlight, according to Houston police.

Around midnight Wednesday, a frantic 911 call was made from the scene on Barberry Drive and Ferdinand Street.

The caller said a man was being beaten by another man at an apartment complex.

When officers arrived, one man was on the ground bleeding and  another man, later identified by police as 33-year-old Joseph Leonard Ellis, was taken into custody.

Police said the victim had been beaten with a flashlight. He was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital where he died from his injuries. Police said the victim appeared to be in his 40s. His name has not been released.

Ellis was detained by police for questioning and eventually charged with murder.
