Texas Children's Hospital holds birthday bash for therapy dog

2-year-old Elsa guest of honor

HOUSTON – Texas Children's Hospital hosted a special celebration for a beloved member of its staff.

The hospital held a birthday bash on Thursday for its therapy dog, Elsa.

The four-legged, full-time employee just turned 2 years old. She celebrated her birthday with patients, hospital workers and other party guests.

Elsa wore a colorful tutu, a party hat and a birthday bandana to her party.

There were presents and cake at the celebration. Elsa enjoyed playing with her new toys and eating a dog-friendly birthday cake from Three Brothers Bakery.

The golden retriever has been a therapy dog at Texas Children's Hospital since October. Her work is funded by a donor family.

Elsa spends her days with her handler and Texas Children’s child life specialist, Sarah Herbek. The pair works with doctors, nurses and physical and occupational therapists to provide support to patients who may be having trouble coping with hospital stays, a new diagnosis or other experiences.
