Boy dies after being accidentally shot in head by twin brother, deputies say

DAYTON, Texas – A 14-year-old boy who was accidentally shot in the head Monday in Liberty County by his twin brother died Tuesday night, deputies said.

"When the deputy arrived, they found a 14-year-old had been shot in the right side of his head," said Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. Ken DeFoor. "It was about a half-inch above his right ear."

Both of the teens spotted a snake in the drainage ditch near their home and went inside to get two .22-caliber rifles.

"For some reason, one of the teens suddenly knelt down, and as he did, at the same time, his brother shot," DeFoor said. "He was in the direct line of fire and the bullet hit inside the head."

The teen was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries Tuesday night, deputies said.

According to DeFoor, no charges are anticipated at this time. He described the shooting as a "tragic accident."
