Tamina community begins fire safety initiative in memory of 3 children killed in house fire

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – On and off heavy downpours in Montgomery County didn’t keep the Tamina community from carrying out its message of fire safety.

"We knew we were going to do this rain or shine," resident Rita Wiltz said.

Montgomery County area firefighters and volunteers gathered the Tamina Community Park to offer tips to keep families safe.

"We've got a lot of firefighters that are ready to make a difference in this community," said Jimmy Williams, the Montgomery County fire marshal.

The day began on a somber note with a release of white balloons to honor the three children who died in a house fire in May.

"The balloon release was another breath," Wiltz said.

Terrance, Kaila and Kyle Mitchell were trapped inside their burning Tamina home on May 12 and, despite the efforts of family members and firefighters, they couldn't save them. The fourth sibling, Adrian, was burned but survived.

"Adrian is a part of our summer program at the YMCA and I saw him yesterday and he's smiling," said Wiltz, who knows the family well. "It meant a lot to know that people care."

Firefighters and volunteers fanned out across the area going door-to-door offering to install brand-new smoke alarms for free.

"This is our way of giving back to the community and it's our way for our firefighters to respond,” Williams said.
