HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department filed charges Tuesday against a suspect arrested after a fatal car crash in southwest Houston, according to HPD.

Randy Carvajal, 38, is charged with intoxicated manslaughter. According to investigators, a disabled black Mercedes C240 was stopped in a moving traffic lane Saturday around 1:15 a.m. when it was struck by a gray Toyota Corolla on the Southwest Freeway near Richmond Avenue.

According to police, the driver of the Toyota got out of his vehicle and was standing next to the driver side door of the Mercedes when a red Fiat — driven by Carvajal — struck the Toyota and then the victim.

Authorities said paramedics took the victim, a 25-year-old man, to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officers said Carvajal was arrested at the scene, determined to be impaired and subsequently charged. KPRC later learned Carvajal is an employee of the Houston Independent School District.

Investigators said the driver of the Mercedes was not injured.
