HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The Harris County Sheriff's Office made history Friday.

A deputy will be allowed to keep his beard and turban required by his Sikh religion while on patrol.

Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal has worked in the sheriff's office for six years. But because of departmental uniform policy, he was not allowed to wear the turban or keep the beard.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia worked with the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund to change the department's policy.

Garcia said he believes the change will inspire other law enforcement agencies to make religious accommodations to employees.
