Protest leads to clash between Black Lives Matter and White Lives Matter groups

HOUSTON – What started as a protest against the Anti-Defamation League Saturday turned into a clash between White Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter and other activist groups.

"They are the antithesis of us," Ashton Woods, with Black Lives Matter Houston said.

"We believe there's a double standard in this country," Ken Reed, with White Lives Matter said.

Another Black Lives Matter supporter said, "When have white lives not mattered? You guys are a joke."

The two groups were separated by barricades during Saturday's demonstration but they stand much further apart on how they see the world.

"These white people are fragile, they are white supremacists and they are extremely racist," Woods said.

"We're not saying your lives don't matter, we're saying white lives matter too," Reed said.

Initially, White Lives Matter was protesting the Anti-Defamation League because it claims the ADL wrote some negative things about the group. ADL officials decided to stay away from their southwest Houston office.

Things got heated at one point when a Black Lives Matter protestor jumped the barrier and headed toward the White Lives Matter area. Houston police quickly defused the situation and guided the protester back to the designated area.

The protester said he doesn't think it possible for both sides to come together for a peaceful resolution.

"Because we feel they have the right to do what they're doing, but they don't feel we have the right to do what we're doing, so there's always going to be that friction," he said.
