Houston area law officers ride horses from Hockley to Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – Dozens of horses and riders made a 120-mile trip to deliver special invitations to the governor of Texas and other state officials.

The Harris County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol participated in its 68th Annual Pony Express Ride. Thirty-six horses and riders, mostly from Houston area law enforcement agencies, delivered invitations to the 2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Secretary of State Rolando Pablos, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and Speaker of the House Joe Straus.

Riders started the journey on Sunday from the Hockley Auction Barn on Old Highway 290. They arrived at the Texas State Capitol in Austin at around noon on Monday.

Lt. Gov. Patrick was among those on hand to receive the invitations.

The 2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs from March 7 to 26 at NRG Park in Houston.
