U.S. Rep. Al Green refuses to attend Trump inauguration

HOUSTON – U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, said Tuesday he will not attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday.

Green said Trump will be the lawful president of the United States, but that he will not be legitimate because of illegitimate voting laws.

"I cannot participate in the inauguration of a person who calls women dogs, who would bar Muslims from this country, who insulted a gold star family, who has insulted Latinos, who has made it very comfortable  for people who promote bigotry and hate to be comfortable with his rhetoric and campaign," Green said Tuesday.

Green joins at least 40 other Democrats refusing to attend Trump's inauguration.

"I have indicated that Dr. (Martin Luther) King Jr. was right. There are times when you do that which is neither say it nor politic nor popular, you have to do it because it is right. Because conscience dictates what is right," he said.
