Police to hold peaceful protest at Beyonce concert this weekend

Houston officers say "Formation" is anti-police

HOUSTON – Beyonce returns home to headline her Formation World Tour at NRG Park Saturday night.

And as the BeyHive would have it, her top song has become the center of controversy.

The Coalition of Police and Sheriffs has planned a peaceful protest outside the concert because the organization said her song “Formation” is anti-police. COPS leaders said 50 to 100 people, including off-duty police officers and sheriff’s deputies, plan to take part in the protest. The organization said protesters will be wearing plain clothing.

"I don't know of anybody from the Houston Police Department who is participating in any protest, or refusing to work any jobs or anything else because of Beyonce's halftime performance or any of her songs," said President Ray Hunt of the Houston Police Officers Union.

The union represents more than 5,000 Houston police officers. Hunt said officers will respect their assignments.

"There are going to be no police officers saying, 'We're not going to be doing our job as police officers for this concert,' just as we don't for anything else that we might not agree with," said Hunt.

Some in the law enforcement community were upset following Beyonce’s halftime performance at Super Bowl 50.

Beyonce said her song has been misinterpreted. The superstar said she admires officers, but is against police brutality.

In response to the officers, the Nation of Islam has called for a protest against the protest during the concert. The group said it considers Beyonce a cultural icon.
