LA PORTE, Texas – A teenage girl was shot in her bedroom around 3:30 a.m. Monday at a house in the 8500 block Avington Road in La Porte, police said.
The 17-year-old was hit in the leg and rushed to the hospital. She is recovering and it is not clear if the bullet was intended for her.
"She started screaming out loud, so I ran to go check," the victim's cousin, Jordan Aldaco, said. "My cousin was on the floor. Her leg was bleeding. They kept screaming she got shot."
Neighbors reported hearing three to four shots.
Police said a bullet was fired through her bedroom window from outside the home.
Officers said they also received a report of gunshots being heard in the area.
The victim's uncle, Chris Aldaco, speculated about the motive of the shooting.
"It might be someone through our immediate family," he said. "A niece's boyfriend that was looking for her because she stayed here a couple of nights with us."
The shooting is under investigation.
