Police: Off-duty Freeport officer accidentally shoots neighbor in Clute

CLUTE, Texas – An off-duty officer accidentally shot his gun, hitting his neighbor in Clute, according to police.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Lakeview Drive.

Police said a bullet went through the police officer's wall, hitting his 35-year-old neighbor in the lower back while he was sleeping.

“That's pretty crazy because it's usually pretty quiet over here and the walls are pretty thin so you hear everything,” said September O'Neil.

Paramedics flew the victim to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston after the shooting.

“Whoever it is, I hope he's OK and he'll be alright because it's sad something like that would even happen especially at four in the morning,” said Chris Darrow.

Police said the officer was 25 years old and has been with the Freeport Police Department for a month.

The department put him on administrative leave until the investigation was complete.

No word on the victim's condition.
