Police ask for help 1 year after deadly hit-and-run in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – Houston police and Crime Stoppers will provide details Thursday in a hit-and-run investigation that began in May 2016.

HPD will provide details in the case of the hit-and-run that killed 19-year-old Diana Grace Vargas at 6:25 a.m. May 15, 2016.

Officials said Vargas was walking east and crossing Chimney Rock when she was hit by a white Nissan Sentra traveling south on Chimney Rock.

The driver of the Nissan fled the scene, police said.

Vargas was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where she died, according to police.

Officials said Vargas was not crossing in a designated crosswalk.

The Nissan was later found abandoned at 6700 Dashwood after striking an apartment wall, police said. The owner of the vehicle was questioned and released.

Vargas' family members ask for the public's help in the investigation.

HPD will hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
