Mistaken identity leads to shooting death of man in Third Ward

2 people in custody being questioned

A Houston family is dealing with enormous grief for a second time in as many weeks after another son was shot and killed by random gunfire.

Police say both were innocent bystanders who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Today has just been beyond emotionally gut-wrenching," says the family's pastor, Dr. D.Z. Cofield, of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

Investigators say 33-year-old Demarcus Tucker was shot and killed by a man they believe was involved in a drug transaction.

It happened early Wednesday morning near Napoleon and Rosalie in the Third Ward, but the shooter mistakenly shot Demarcus -- who wasn't involved.

The shooter said he was in the area around 4 a.m., attempting to sell drugs. He was waiting in his truck at the corner of Rosalie and Napoleon when Tucker approached.

At some point during the encounter, Tucker reached in the truck and tried to take the shooter's gun, according to police. After a struggle, the gun discharged, striking Tucker in the face. The shooter then left the scene.

About an hour-and-a-half later, the shooter was seen driving by the location and was taken into custody, police said.

Due to conflicting witness statements and the circumstances involved, the case is being referred to a Harris County grand jury. The investigation is ongoing.

Just two weeks earlier, Demarcus's younger brother, 19-year-old Dequarius Tucker, was shot and killed at a Fourth of July celebration in the Fourth Ward. In that case, police say he, too, was an innocent bystander.

The family is now forced to deal with unimaginable tragedy not just once, but twice in the same month.

"I'm just lost for words right now," said Charlie Ferguson, father of Demarcus and stepfather of Dequarius, through tears. "I'm so sorry."

"You can feel the closeness," said Cofield. "You can feel the love in this family and yet, tragedy still found them."

Police arrested two suspects in the shooting of Demarcus Tucker Wednesday morning. His funeral is scheduled for next Tuesday at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

He had two children, and a GoFundMe account has been set up to assist them. To help, you can go here.
