Deputies seek suspect in Harris County teen's shooting death

HOUSTON – A man is on the run after being charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting death of 16-year-old Cary Griffith.

Deputies are looking for Tryin Deon Robertson, 20, after Griffith was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in northeast Harris County, officials said.

The shooting was reported at 1 p.m. at the Pine Trails Subdivision, in the 14000 block of Lorne Drive.

Deputies said Cary Griffith, 16, was walking with a group of boys when a man drove up in a blue Dodge Avenger and stopped his vehicle at the intersection of Lorne and Hollow Pine drives.

Deputies said the person exchanged words with the three teens, got back into his car, pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the group before driving off.

Deputies said Griffith was shot and taken to East Houston Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Family and friends said they know who the gunman and say he lives in the area.

“He needs to turn himself in and face his consequences for what he has done," said a concerned woman, who wishes to remain unnamed.

Investigators said the shooter was targeting another teen Griffith was walking with.

“My heart is broken, just broken. My only son. I mean, he was a mama’s boy. I mean, I would do anything for him,” said Alicia Smith, the slain teen’s mother.

“Nobody deserves to be shot down in the street like that.”

Investigators said Robertson was driving a four-door 2008 blue Dodge Avenger with Texas license plate GFF-3361.

“It's just horrible just to hear that anyone gets shot down like that, especially that young. He got so much life ahead of him,” the concerned woman said.

Deputies said Robertson is armed and dangerous.

The Harris County Sheriff's Department homicide unit is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information about Robertson's whereabouts or the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Robertson was charged with murder in connection with the case.
