Lanier Middle School parents protest Houston ISD's proposed school name changes

HOUSTON – Sydney Lanier Middle School parents held a news conference Monday to protest the Houston Independent School District's proposal to change the names of several schools.

Parents claimed that Houston ISD is going against its own regulations by voting to rename the schools. Parents said the district is failing to inform the public of how much the name changes will cost and where the money will come from.

The Board of Education will vote on the names on Thursday.

"We are hoping that on Thursday, or that today, that there's going to be some remedial action that's going to move this issue to where it should be," an opponent said. "Either a reconsideration, or take it off the table until you actually do your homework and fulfill your own requirements."

HISD on Friday revealed the proposed name changes of seven schools.

The district proposed that Lanier keep the last name of the school, but be named after former Houston mayor Bob Lanier, who served as mayor from 1992 to 1998.

If approved, the new school names will go into effect for the 2016-17 school year.

The board voted earlier this year to change the names of the schools, many of which had ties to the Confederacy.
