Man killed in shootout with officers after chase ends in Baytown

BAYTOWN, Texas – A man was killed Tuesday morning during a shootout with officers after a chase ended in Baytown.

According to Jefferson County deputies, authorities tried to stop a black SUV about 8:49 a.m. traveling west on Interstate 10, but the vehicle sped away. Authorities chased the vehicle into neighboring Chambers County.

Deputies said authorities from Chambers County, Baytown police and troopers from the Department of Public Safety joined the chase.

Baytown police deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the vehicle, deputies said, and the 36-year-old driver, identified as Ivory C. Pantallion III, tried to run over the Baytown officer controlling those strips.

The pursued vehicle crashed near I-10 and Sjolander Road after a successful PIT maneuver by police. After crashing, Pantallion exchanged gunfire with authorities, deputies said. Pantallion, of Beaumont, was hit and died at the scene.

Deputies said they are not sure why Pantallion fled.

A DPS spokesman said that Pantallion showed a gun to deputies during the chase and again after the crash.

The Texas Rangers were investigating the case.
