Off-duty HPD officer involved in shooting in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – An off-duty officer with the Houston Police Department was involved in a shooting on Hickok Lane in southeast Houston on Tuesday.

Officials said the shooting happened after an attempted robbery at about 1:15 p.m.

KPRC 2 was told the officer was meeting two people at Hickok and Scott Street to sell a personal firearm and one of the men pulled a gun on the officer.

Police said the officer had been discussing the sale of a gun on a legitimate gun-selling website.

"The suspect approaches him on the passenger side, the officer rolls the window down, there were words exchanged. The suspect pulls a weapon out of his pocket, points it at him and tells him to, 'Give me everything you got or I'll shot and kill you right here," Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said.

Police said the robber pulled the trigger, but his gun malfunctioned. The officer tried to reverse his truck and that's when he got out of the truck, pulled out his own weapon and started firing.

The two men exchanged gunfire, but the two suspects fled the scene. Investigators said one of the men showed up a fire station several minutes later with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to Ben Taub Hospital. There is no word on his condition. The second robber remains at large.

The officer has been with HPD for a year and eight months. He was not hit or injured during the shooting.
