Man hit and killed by drunken driver while helping dad with disabled vehicle

HOUSTON – A man was hit and killed by a suspected drunken driver while trying to help his father Sunday night.

Police said Adrian Hernandez, 25, was in a silver Grand Prix when he hit a white truck in another lane on Highway 59 at Crosstimbers.

Hernandez then crossed five lanes, and hit and killed 30-year-old Nelson Gamboa, according to investigators.

Gamboa was standing outside his truck on the shoulder helping his father when he was hit.

Family members said Gamboa was towing his dad's vehicle using a belt tied to the bumpers when it broke. They stopped to tie the cars back together. His father made it back into his vehicle, but Gamboa was hit.

“The Grand Prix was traveling southbound in lane No. 1 and struck the white F350 in lane number 2. That caused the Grand Prix to cross all five lanes of traffic and strike our victim who was standing outside in the emergency shoulder,” said Sgt. J.D. Rossman.

A good Samaritan stopped to try to give CPR, but it was too late.

Hernandez was taken to LBJ Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators said he was drunk at the time of the crash and will be charged with intoxication manslaughter. His bond is set for $100,000.

Gamboa's family told KPRC 2 that he was a Marine and that he attended Sam Houston High School.
