Man says daughter's iPhone overheated in her pocket

HOUSTON – Randy Veazey said his daughter's iPhone 6 Plus was in her pocket when it started overheating.

"Here you can see where it burned," Veazey said. "Smoke was billowing out. It smelled really bad. So she yanked it out, it was too hot to hold, so she threw it on the ground."

The next thing they knew, a burning odor and a lot smoke started billowing from the phone.

"It's pretty scary, like I keep mine in my pocket and I've felt it hot before," Veazey said.

Last month, a New Jersey college student's iPhone exploded in his back pocket.

In September, federal safety regulators had to recall 1 million Samsung Galaxy Note 7s after users reported the device caught fire while charging.

Needless to say, Veazey said he won't buy another iPhone, and probably not a Samsung, either.

At this point, he's just glad his daughter wasn't hurt.

"I mean, she could have been asleep, you know, you know how kids are, they could be asleep with the phone in the bed. Even worse, it could have been laying down when it did this and everyone asleep it could have caught fire," Veazey said.

Veazey took the phone to the Apple store last night. They took pictures and said they'd get back to him about what happened in one to two days.

We reached out to Apple, and while they couldn't say exactly what happened without looking at the phone in person, they said they're looking into it.
