Man found shot to death outside Chulas Sports Cantina in north Harris County

HOUSTON – A man is in custody after he shot and killed someone outside a sports bar in north Harris County on Friday, said the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Julian Villegas, 19 was charged with capital murder.

"There was a bunch of people on the patio and they were pointing. We said, 'What are y'all looking at?' and they said 'Somebody is laying on the floor over there. I think he got shot,'" said Jose Temores, a customer at Chula's.

According to HCSO, Villegas was eating at Chula's Sports Cantina on North Freeway with Anthony Johnson, 38, and three other men at about 3p.m. on Friday. Investigators said all of the men came to Chula's after a night of drinking.

When the men left the bar, they went out to the parking lot, and that's when investigators said Villegas pulled out a handgun and shot Johnson multiple times. They said Villegas then stole Johnson's 2013 Chrysler 200 and drove away.

"The suspect happened to be in our victim's vehicle and had some of the victim's property," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

HCSO said Villegas got into two separate car accidents in the stolen car and led Houston police officers on a chase. He then allegedly got out of the vehicle and tried to run away but police officers arrested him.

The Sheriff's Office homicide investigators said Villegas admitted to killing Johnson and they charged him with capital murder.

He is currently in the Harris County Jail awaiting trial.
