MONTROSE, Texas – A man was found lying dead in a pool of blood Friday outside a resale shop in Montrose.
Ardie Scott Powell, 26, is facing murder charges, according to Houston police. He is accused of killing Corey X. Shapmon, 22.
Police were called around 4 a.m. to the Charity Guild of Catholic Women in the 1200 block of Lovett Boulevard.
Investigators said a group of homeless people discovered the victim after a man woke them up and asked if they wanted to see a body. When they started asking the man questions about what happened, he ran away, they said.
"His hands were all bloody and everything. His knuckles were bloody, he was just paranoid," said a man identified only as Jacob, who said he sometimes spends the night in the alleyway behind the charity resale shop.
He said he woke up to a man who was acting crazy and talking about a dead body.
"He came by us. He was like, 'Y'all want to see a dead body?' and we're like, 'Yeah,' so we went over there," Jacob said.
There were no visible signs of injury to the body, but detectives said there were signs of some sort of physical altercation between the victim and his attacker
"He's lying on a mat so it appears (that's) where he was going to sleep for the night. He's got some shoes stacked up, he's got gummy bears stacked up. It appears this was where he was going to lay his head," HPD Homicide Detective Fil Waters said.
