Herrera, 41, was critically injured, suffering lacerations and head trauma.

Witnesses said on Herrera was standing near the entrance of an apartment complex at 6767 Long Drive near Telephone Road in southeast Houston on Sept. 12 when the driver of a gray Nissan Frontier pickup truck hit her. The driver then traveled to the rear of the complex entrance, accelerated toward Herrera and hit her again, authorities said.

Guardado put the vehicle in reverse and struck Herrera a third time, and as he left the apartment complex, he struck her a fourth time, according to police.

The vehicle was found the same day.

Guardado, 69, was identified as a suspect in the case. He was arrested without incident Monday morning.

Herrera's son, Michael Hernandez, said his mother rarely came outside after 7 p.m. and never after dark.

"She hates being alone. She hates the dark and keeps to herself," he said.

Hernandez said he doesn't know why she was with a former co-worker Sunday night and he doesn't understand why someone would try to kill her.

"She has to have surgery on her pelvis because it was broken in a few places. They're going to fix it," Hernandez said.
