Katy ISD teacher accused of stealing drugs from nurses office, district says

KATY, Texas – A Katy Independent School District teacher accused of stealing prescription drugs from the nurses office has resigned, a Katy ISD spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

According to the statement, on Aug. 24, a nurse at Stanley Elementary found a key broken off in the lock of a cabinet and noticed missing medication. The incident was reported to school administration, which reported it to Katy ISD police.

"It just talked about how an employee had stolen from the nurse's meds," parent Melissa Roy said.

After an investigation, it was found that a Stanley Elementary physical education teacher was responsible for the theft, the school district said.

"I hope the teacher gets the help he needs. Just kind of sad they gotta steal from the kids, you know," another parent said.

The teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave and resigned Friday, the statement said.

The PE teacher is facing criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and theft charges, according to the district.

The Katy ISD School District statement read:

“On August 24, a nurse at Stanley Elementary discovered a key broken off in the lock of a cabinet and noticed missing medication.  The nurse reported this to school administration who contacted Katy ISD Police and Human Resources to investigate immediately.  It was determined that an employee had taken the prescriptions.  The employee was immediately removed from the campus and placed on administrative leave that same day.  The employee, who resigned on September 2 while the investigation was still in progress, faces charges for criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and theft.”

Some parents were more upset than others.

"Very uncomfortable, I'm upset," Monica Choung said. "Think about it, if whoever did it is my teacher, my kid's teacher and I'd be very upset about it."

Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect.

The school district said the former employee has a court date set for Oct. 19 to answer for the misdemeanor theft charge.
