Katy ISD holds ground-breaking ceremony for new $58 million stadium

HOUSTON – Students, teachers and administrators from Katy Independent School District gathered for the official ground-breaking ceremony for a new stadium.

This will be the second football stadium in the district. Jack Rhodes Memorial Stadium is currently shared between the district's seven high schools with football teams.

On Tuesday, the district released pictures showing a fan's-eye view of what will become the new stadium that will seat 12,000 people. The current stadium seats nearly 10,000.

The multi-purpose space will also include a two-story press box, training rooms and a 12,000 square feet field house with space for police officers, paramedics and coaches.

The new stadium was part of a $748 million school bond package that was approved by voters in November 2014.

“In the past they (residents) thought it was an administrative request,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “This was a community request. The community took ownership and made it happen. Of course soccer and football will be here, but the stadium will also be used for performing arts, and band concerts. When the bond past I saw signs pop up around us for business to come. We’re looking to add about 500,000 dollars in venue at least, because of this facility,” said Frailey.

Rhodes Stadium will still be used after the new stadium's completion.
