Memorial service for Deputy Goforth to be held Saturday

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Friends and family of Deputy Darren Goforth will hold a memorial service in the park that carries his name on Saturday.

Goforth was murdered as he pumped gas at a Chevron station on West Road in Cypress on Aug. 28, 2015.

The memorial begins at 9 a.m. at  9402 Barker Cypress Road in Cypress.

“Darren was a good man with a big smile and a big heart,” Andre Reynolds, one of Goforth’s friends, said.

The memorial is open to the public, Reynolds said. He encouraged people to attend.

Reynolds said Goforth was a kind man who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need.

Investigators allege Shannon Miles shot Goforth. Harris County prosecutors charged Miles with capital murder, which means the death penalty is a possible sentence.

Miles was found incompetent to stand trial and is receiving mental health treatment in an attempt to restore his competency.

Anthony Osso, Miles’ attorney, said he doesn’t expect an update on Miles’ mental health progress until the end of his required mental health stay, which is in November.

The case garnered much public attention because no motive has been disclosed.

After the killing, news surfaced that Goforth had a mistress who was with him when he was killed. Later, court documents showed other deputies had inappropriate relationships with the same woman.

Three deputies were fired as a result.
