Intoxicated man detained at scene after attempting to run from fatal crash, police say

HOUSTON – A 19-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police said he ran a red light and struck another vehicle, killing a 62-year-old woman.

Police said Jeremy Jax was leaving the scene of a minor accident in a silver Ford Taurus around 11 p.m. Jan. 13 when he ran a red light at the Southwest Freeway and Westpark, striking a silver Toyota Camry and a black Isuzu Rodeo that were westbound on Westpark.

Martha Barrios Rojas, a passenger in the Camry, and a the driver of the Camry were taken to the hospital. Rojas was in critical condition and was pronounced dead on Jan. 20, police said.

Jax was detained at the scene by a citizen who witnessed the crash, according to police reports.

Police determined that Jax was intoxicated.

Jax is charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault and two counts of failure to stop and render aid.
