Inside fancy fallout shelters you can soon call home

Trident Lakes is a 700-acre property in Ector

HOUSTON – Forget the bomb shelters of yesteryear. Have you heard of doomsday condos?

Today’s doomsday accommodations are designed to feel more like a five-star resort than a hole in the ground, and the most luxurious of them all will soon be found in Texas.

Welcome to Trident Lakes, a 700-acre property in Ector, which is about 90 minutes north of Dallas. When the project is complete, it will be home to 2,000 people and will provide off-the-grid living complete with high security and luxury.

Construction is expected to begin this summer.

This is a far cry from the bunkers of the 1950s and 1960s.

“We were originally thinking we might build completely subterranean, but we quickly realized people like to have light,” said Jim O’Connor, the CEO of Trident Lakes. “So we’ve come up with this idea of earth-sheltered condos.”

Trident Lakes will offer many amenities, including high-end retail, sculpted gardens, a golf course, gun range and polo fields -- and each condo will overlook a lagoon or green space.

Should Texas be ground zero for an attack, all condos will be connected through tunnels to food storage, exercise rooms, a pool, a greenhouse and vaults containing your DNA for future procreation.

So, who’s moving in?

Possibly Jason Foss, 38, a sales manager for IBM, along with his girlfriend, Samantha, and their three dogs.

Foss is one of many on the waiting list.

“It was really just the all-inclusive package that drew me in,” he said.

And while he’s eager to move in, he said he doesn’t want to be the first one through the door.

“You never want to be the guinea pig and be the first one in there, but at the same time, you don’t want to miss out on opportunities,” Foss said.

Foss likes the luxury feel, combined with the high security, Trident Lakes is advertising to prospective buyers.

As for what one of the condos will cost, prices start at $350,000 and go up to $2 million.

“This is a need people have and it’s not just something for the athletes and celebrities of the world,” Foss said.
