Conroe ISD bus monitor killed trying to help disabled motorist on I-45

HOUSTON – A Conroe ISD employee was being a good Samaritan trying to help a disabled motorist when she was struck and killed Wednesday morning on I-45 in Conroe.

Conroe police dispatch received a report around 5:23 a.m. from a concerned motorist who saw a single-vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of 1400 S. Interstate 45.

The motorist, Georgina Dunham, told dispatchers that she was going to check on the driver involved in the accident.

Dunham, who was located in the far outside shoulder, turned on her blinker and attempted to cross all five southbound lanes of traffic on the freeway, police said.

She made it across four of the lanes, but was struck in the rear while crossing into the final lane.  The impact spun her vehicle around and pushed it into a concrete wall.

Emergency crews transported Dunham to Conroe Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

"She was a well-loved, well-spoken person. It is a sad day in transportation," Larry Smith, operations manager with Conroe ISD Transportation, said.

Smith said Dunham, 25, had been a standby bus monitor since last October. He now he comforts his staff. He has a message for those who never met her.

"They will never get a chance to meet a person that was great as she was. She was always helpful, always friendly. I feel that she died doing what she would normally do for people, is trying to help people," Smith said.

The mother of one had just bought a shiny new Kia, still with the paper plates. Smith said Dunham she loved her daughter and had a strong faith.

"She was only with us a short while. But from the time she came here, she made friends. Everyone loved her. I had much respect for her," Smith said.

Conroe ISD released the following statement:

"Georgina Dunham has been a standby bus monitor at The Woodlands Transportation Center since October 2015. Counselors will be made readily available to anyone in need."
