Family of man killed in SW Houston restaurant remembers their loved one

HOUSTON – A family was grieving after gunman killed their 57-year-old loved one inside a restaurant in southwest Houston.

“It's crazy. Everyone is so scared,” said Nguyen Vuong, an employee at a nearby restaurant.

With 30 people inside the Huong Giang Hue restaurant, police said two armed men wearing masks barged in at about 8:45 p.m. Friday.

“They robbed the cash register, put all the customers on the floor to attempt to rob them,” police said.

But family members said a 57-year-old man who was eating inside with his wife and young son tried to stop them.

“As one of the customers was being robbed, he started fighting with one of the suspects at which time the suspect shot him,” police said.

The man died.

An employee from three doors down said the cook ran to their restaurant to hide.

“She required (us) to turn off the lights and we close and lock the door and we keep our diners here inside and then we call 911,” said Vuong.

Police moved the 30 customers including the victim's family into that other restaurant where they interviewed them for about nine hours.

Police said the two robbers got away.

“At this point the suspects are still at large. We have a couple of leads on who they might be,” police said.

Investigators said the pair may be involved in other robberies and they're reviewing surveillance from inside the restaurant to help catch the killers.

The medical examiner has not released the victim's name.
