Mystery surrounding man's death in jail

HOUSTON – Channel 2 Investigates is uncovering new information in the case of a man found dead in the city's jail.

A 33-year-old man was found dead in his cell shortly after 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Houston Police Department said the man was arrested early Sunday morning at a store near Westheimer and Dairy Ashford. He fought officers at the scene and appeared drunk.

Police said the man was combative and punched walls once he was taken to jail. Seven hours after being placed in police custody, he was found dead in an insolation cell.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences performed an autopsy on the man and is trying to notify his family. Until then, the medical examiner will not release what caused the man to die.

There was a camera rolling for several hours while the man was alone in the cell. HPD has not released that video at this time.

The case remains under investigation by HPD and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
