Houston Newsmakers: Apr. 5: Mayor candidate McVey plans break from crowded field

Tomball Tollway scheduled to open next week; Career Gear Houston a Godsend for veterans

HOUSTONMarty McVey recently kicked off his campaign to run for the office of Mayor of Houston.

McVey is one of seven men who have already declared similar intentions but he says the crowded field is not a barrier.

"I'm not the candidate that's run over and over again," he said. "I am new to this field but there's no school that you go to become mayor. I'm determined to give back to the city and I think I'm the most qualified for that."

McVey is a guest on this week's Houston Newsmakers and said among other things, he will call for an office of economic development that will report to the mayor to focus on keeping Houston economically aggressive.

It's called "Mission Possible," a program that makes suits and other quality clothing available to veterans through "Career Gear." It is a nonprofit organization focusing on what's called transitional readiness for veterans.

"We have the soft skills training, interviewing training, corporate etiquette and we suit them," said Uchenna Agu, the organization's chairman of the board.

Jason McDonald is an Army veteran who had a rough time getting back into the workforce until he found Career Gear.

"I learned how to translate my skills from the military into the private sector," he said. "I learned how to sell myself with an elevator pitch and I've actually got employment, and I go to school and I have great direction in my life."
