Houston mayor proclaims June 7 as Prince Rogers Nelson Day

HOUSTON – People all over the world are remembering and celebrating Prince's life on his birthday, June 7.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed Tuesday as Prince Rogers Nelson Day.

The mayor's office released the proclamation:

"WHEREAS, Prince Rogers Nelson (Prince) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and actor who was also a music and fashion innovator, known for his electric work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant attire and wide vocal range who sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling artist of all time; and,

WHEREAS, Prince was a seven-time Grammy Awards recipient and a Golden Globe Award recipient who also won an Academy Award for the motion picture classic, Purple Rain, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004; and,

WHEREAS, Prince often made Houston a destination when out on tour during his decorated musical career, performing concerts at the Houston Summit, the Toyota Center, Hofheinz Pavilion and Warehouse Live, among other venues; and,

WHEREAS, Prince and his musical genius touched many lives around the world with his career spanning nearly 40 years, making him a global icon whose spirit and music will transcend time; and,

WHEREAS, on June 7, 2016, Prince’s life will be celebrated. The City of Houston is grateful for Prince Rogers Nelson’s leadership, faithful service and affection and commends those who celebrate his life and his impact on the community. Houstonians are encouraged to wear purple on Prince Rogers Nelson Day in honor of “The Purple One’s” enduring legacy.

THEREFORE, I, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim June 7, 2016, as Prince Rogers Nelson Day."
