2-year-old girl drowns in 'tragic accident' at SW Houston home

HOUSTON – A 2-year-old girl died in an accidental drowning in southwest Houston on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Around 1:10 p.m., authorities arrived to the 5700 block of South Braeswood Boulevard and found Darby Morton had fallen into a pool.

Houston police said she was with her family visiting friends, when she wandered off, fell into the pool and drowned.

Houston Fire Department paramedics found the toddler unresponsive on the grass near a pool in the backyard.

Paramedics took the child to Texas Children's Hospital, administering CPR en route, HFD said. Darby was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Roee Hasson, a neighbor who has little ones of her own, said she can't imagine what Darby's family is going through.

"It's horrible, especially when I look at my children and hear that. I get shocked," Hasson said. "If something God forbid will happen, I can not live my life."

Police said relatives may have been asleep at the time Darby wandered off, although the family said they were talking with friends when the child managed to make it outside.

Investigators said it is a terrible loss for the family.

"From what I've gathered from the interview so far, it appears to be no foul play involved, and this was just a tragic accident," Houston Police Department spokesperson John Villarreal said.

Neighbors said the loss is also a painful reminder to other parents.

"Parents, please keep your eyes on your little ones if you have a pool. You just can't take your eyes off of them,"  neighbor Robby Mautz said.
