Hero who gave his life to save others is honored at Houston City Hall

HOUSTON – A man who is considered a true hero, giving his life to save others, was recognized Tuesday at Houston City Hall.

Glenn "Woody" Higgins noticed a car had slammed into an electrical pole off the Beltway 8 feeder road and State Highway 288 and rushed into action.

Tuesday, Houston City Council members recognized him as a local hero.

The mayor and council members presented Higgins' family with an award, honoring his bravery.

Higgins died last year due to injuries he suffered while trying to rescue people from a burning car.

When he rushed to help, Higgins stepped on a live power line and was electrocuted.

Higgins was hospitalized, had both legs amputated and eventually died from his severe injuries.

His wife, family members and co-workers at the U.S. Postal Service remember him fondly.

"We appreciate what they've done, recognizing him. He's truly, truly a hero. Even a year later, he's still a hero," said James Joseph, a family member..

Higgins was 58 years old when he died. He is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren.
