Hearing to determine Shannon Miles competency to stand trail postponed

HOUSTON – A judge postponed a hearing to rule on the competency of the man accused of killing Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth.

Shannon Miles' attorney Anthony Osso requested more time to interview his client and review the evidence with his medical experts.

The judge, at first, argued, “Based on the evidence, it appears his competency should be restored" but said at a point in the future, it could be reversed.

After a back-and-forth from with the defense, the judge granted Osso's request.

Osso said he had only met briefly with his client Wednesday morning since authorities brought him back to Harris County on Tuesday.

Osso said Miles appeared to be confused but calm.

Miles was charged with capital murder in the execution style killing of Goforth in August 2015.

Back in February, Miles was found incompetent to stand trial and went to a state mental hospital for treatment.

Earlier this month, doctors ruled Miles competent to stand trial, and they transferred him back to Harris County.

The judge is expected to make a final ruling on Miles competency on Nov. 16.
