Good Samaritan helps rescue stranded METRO bus driver, passengers

HOUSTON – At West Bellfort and the Southwest Freeway, a METRO bus was caught in rising flood waters Wednesday morning.

While a tow truck was able to pull it out around 11 a.m., earlier in the day the waters were impassable and that bus, with its passengers, was stuck.

“All of a sudden we just got stuck. The whole bus was submerged. The water goes so high that we have to climb in the bus and hang onto something,” says Victor.

Victor was one of the two passengers on the bus. Along with the bus driver, they were in a sort of shock and didn't know what to do. That's when Carlos appeared.

“He came right to the window, he carried me on his head, right out of the bus, and took me through the water and dropped me off at the other side of the McDonald's,” says Victor.

“I see the people in the bus so, I don’t know, maybe they don’t know what they have to do,” recalls Carlos. “I say, 'c’mon, get out cause the bus is down' you know.”

When asked if he had ever done anything like this before Carlos says, “No, never. This is my first time.”

“He didn’t even stop to talk to me because he was rushing back to rescue the other people. He’s such a very nice guy,” says Victor.

The bus wasn’t the only vehicle that Carlos helped out.

Not only was his vehicle trapped, but a truck, a van and two other cars were in the area all of which he took the time to check and make sure those drivers were OK.
