Galveston police investigate deadly shooting

Man found lying the road with multiple gunshot wounds

GALVESTON – Galveston police are investigating a deadly shooting.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots on the 1800 block of 40th Street Thursday night, and found a man lying in the roadway with several gunshot wounds.  He was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was later identified as Ervin Hayes, 42.  Witnesses identified the shooter as Stormy Cook, 56.

Witnesses told police the the two men were involved in a heated argument in front of 1818 40th St.

Police say initial evidence may indicate the shooting was in self-defense.  They found two guns at the scene.

No charges have been filed in the case.

The case will be handed over the Galveston County District Attorney's Office and may be referred to a grand jury.
