Former security guard indicted for hitting student at UH game

HOUSTON – A former security who was caught on tape punching a University of Houston football fan after a historic victory in December has been charged with assault.

The video is still hard to watch for some.  It happened at the end of the Coog's historic conference-clinching win at TDECU Stadium in December as fans rushed the field in celebration.

"I saw people getting tackled.  Other people just running by," recalls fan Andy Ney.  "It was sort of a random thing where they targeted whoever they could catch up to."

"Emotions were running high and everybody just wanted to celebrate," remembers UH senior Michon Wiley.

The now former security guard whaling away at the victim of the attack is 38-year-old Derrick Dewayne Hicks.  Wednesday a grand jury indicted Hicks on a charge of assault with bodily injury.  Fans and students who were there that day say his actions went too far.

"You never know what could've happened to that person," says student Harold Cornell.  "Head injuries, a lot of things could've happened.  You never put your hands on nobody.  Never."

Channel 2 tried to get Hicks' side of the story but he refused to answer our questions outside his home in northeast Houston.

Court documents show that before the December assault Hicks had accumulated a lengthy criminal record including charges of property theft, evading arrest, marijuana possession, and tampering with evidence.  This newest charge still is one of the few sour notes from a season to remember.

"You can't be security and then rough up people like that," says Ney.

Hicks was working for Contemporary Services Corporation as a security guard at the game.  He was fired from that job after the altercation.
