Firefighters: Turbulence injured at least 10 aboard Houston-bound flight

HOUSTON – At least 10 people aboard a United Airlines flight bound for Houston on Tuesday were injured by turbulence, according to firefighters.

The incident was reported about 1:40 p.m. aboard United flight 1031 from Panama City, Panama, to George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration said crew on the Boeing 737 reported encountering severe turbulence about 80 miles east of Cancun, Mexico.

Houston firefighters said they were treating between 10 and 15 patients. They said three people were taken to a local hospital after the flight landed.

The extent of injuries was not immediately released.

United released the following statement on the incident:

"United flight 1031 experienced turbulence while en route from Panama City, Panama to Houston. Paramedics met the aircraft to provide medical care and initial reports are that nine customers and one crew member were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Our thoughts and concerns are with those who were injured and our team is reaching out directly to our customers to provide further care and support."
