Deputies shoot, kill man after boy found covered in mother's blood, officials say

CONROE, Texas – Two Montgomery County deputies Wednesday morning shot and killed a knife-wielding man after he stabbed his wife to death, authorities said.

The stabbing was reported about 5:40 a.m. at a home on Chestnut Meadows Drive at Jacobs Lake Boulevard.

Capt. Bryan Carlisle, of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, said an 11-year-old boy called 911 and reported that his father, identified as 41-year-old Medger Blake, was stabbing his mother, identified as 38-year-old Rose Blake, to death and he was begging his father to stop. He said the boy hid in the bathroom until deputies arrived.

Carlisle said that when deputies arrived, the boy ran outside and he was covered in blood.

Deputies went inside the home where they were confronted by a blood-covered Medger Blake holding a knife, Carlisle said. He said that the deputies ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused. He lunged at the deputies and the deputies shot and killed him, he said.

Seven-year veteran of the Montgomery County Sheriff's office, deputy Zach Vercher and 11-year veteran, Deputy Brett Veith were identified as the deputies who shot Medger Blake.

“Both deputies did what they had to do,” Carlisle said.

Carlisle said Rose Blake's body was also found inside the home.

“In 20 years of law enforcement, I’ve seen a lot of bad things, and so have a lot of these deputies out here, and this one is pretty rough,” Carlisle said.

“There was just no signs of anything, you have a beautiful family like them, you’re not expecting this,” said the couple’s pastor and spokesperson, Dr. Roche Coleman, senior pastor of Impact Church of The Woodlands, said. “This is just a challenging time for all of us right now, especially family trying to deal with all of this.”

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said detectives found an 8-page note inside the home and believe it was written by one of the family members and may give clues as to what led up to the stabbing.

Deputies said a lot of the extended family drove in from Louisiana and that the young boy is currently with family members.

The 11-year-old is a student at Collins Intermediate and Conroe Independent School District sent a letter home with parents offering counseling if students need it.

Neighbors said they would always see the young boy playing with friends on the street.

“He’s a sweet kid played with a lot of kids in the neighborhood he was just a great kid,” said Steve Toth. “Always had a smile on his face, very respectful, his dad was a nice guy, his dad would come out and play hoops with him all the time.”

Toth said he would see Medger from time to time and would talk to him in passing.

“He’s always waving at you and smiling at you when he drove down the street,” explained Toth. “He loved Syracuse basketball, I said, 'Did you go to Syracuse,' he said ‘No, I just love the Orange.'”

“They just seemed like a great family, but obviously there was some trouble behind the scenes that no one was privy to,” said Toth.

Deputies said the couple had another son who is in college and was on his way back to Houston.

A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Vercher and Deputy Veith are on administrative duty while the investigation continues, which is standard protocol.

"Clearly our thoughts and prayers go out, not only to the families of both the victim and the suspect, but to the Deputies who were forced to use their weapons because of the suspect’s actions. The Deputies  will  be  placed  on  paid  administrative  leave  per  policy,  pending  the  outcome  of  the investigation," MCSO said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the note found in the home was written by Medger. It was directed toward the two sons and told them what to do with the property and money left behind.

Deputies said the note was apologetic.

Here is a statement from ExxonMobil:

"Rose Blake was an employee with ExxonMobil. We were deeply shocked and saddened by the news today, and our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Blake's family and friends."
