Storm forces school closures; clean up continues

HOUSTON – Massive storms packed high winds and torrential rain, wrecking people's homes and crushing buildings into nothing but rubble. It happened this weekend in La Porte, Pasadena and Friendswood.

But the wild weather also took its toll on several different school districts.

In the La Porte Independent School District, maintenance crews were hard at work Sunday trying to purge all the water from Jennie Reid Elementary School.

There, water-logged ceiling tiles have completely fallen in, and soaked and ruined carpeting is being ripped out, where heavy rains poured right through the schools ripped up roof.

Reid Elementary is just one of 12 La Porte campuses that will be closed all day Monday for cleanup.

At La Porte High School, Melanie Mahoney, a member of the marching band, told Channel 2 News, "We got an email from school saying the whole B building, where the math and science hall is, was completely flooded with water."

La Porte High is also slated to be closed all day Monday, but will reopen Tuesday.

And in Webster, where high winds and pounding rain also played havoc, Omar Mireles found out Sunday that his young son, Jayden, will be spending Monday and Tuesday at home because of flood damage at Greene Elementary School in the Clear Creek school system.

"My wife got a call today telling us that there is water damage at the school and due to that fact, the kids are going to be off for a couple days," Mireles said.

Within the Hardin Independent School District, school officials said all classes will start an hour later on Monday.

All schools within the Hull-Daisetta ISD will also be closed Monday as a result of this weekend's storms.
