Man shot by officers after firing at them, police say

HOUSTON – A man who shot at officers Monday morning after leading them on a short chase was shot by the officers who were chasing him, according to police.

The shooting happened at 1:35 a.m. at 301 Benmar Drive.

According to Houston police, officers tried to stop a speeding van that was being driven by 26-year-old Francisco Javier Solais. He refused to stop and led officers on a short chase. Soalis then stopped the van, got out and ran across a parking lot.

Police said that when two officers who had run after Solais caught up to him, he pulled out a gun and fired at them. The officers then returned fire, hitting Solais more than once.

Solais was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

Investigators said that before the shooting, Solais had been involved in a robbery at 137 W. Dyna Drive, during which a security guard detained his accomplice.

The officers, who were identified as S. Gromyko and M. Cass, were not injured in the shooting. They have been with the Houston Police Department since June 2012.

Solais was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and aggravated robbery.
