Campus carry starts on UT-Austin campus; protest planned

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas students can carry something else with them on campus starting Wednesday.

The campus carry law went into effect at the beginning of the month, and school started on Wednesday. The law allows licensed gun owners to carry concealed, loaded handguns into university buildings and classrooms.

Professors at the university sued to try and block the controversial law, but a federal judge denied the request Monday.

Gun control advocates with Gun-Free UT are planning to protest the new law across the campus Wednesday. The Gun-Free UT coalition consists of faculty, students, staff and alumni opposed to allowing guns in campus building.
