Boy, 10, accused of shooting father during drive to school

HOUSTON – When he heard the news that his friend and neighbor had been shot, never in a million years did Jose Correa think the man's 10-year-old son would be the gunman, but that's exactly what happened, according to Houston police.

Investigators said just after 7 a.m. Tuesday near the 7000 block of Bissonnet, 40-year-old Antonio Alvarenga had been driving his 10-year-old son and daughter to school.

That's when Alvarenga's son, who was sitting in the back seat, allegedly pulled a gun from his backpack and shot his father once in the back.

Alvarenga called Jose Correa from the hospital and initially didn't realize his own son had pulled the trigger.

"I asked of him, 'How did that happen?' says Correa. "And he told me that somebody told him that his son do it."

The questions now: Why did the boy shoot his father and where did he get the gun?

Police transported the child from the scene to their Child Assessment Center for questioning while his father underwent surgery.

"My wife called me at about 5," says Correa. "She told me that he is recovered now and the surgery is fine."

As of now, no charges have been filed in the case.
