Officials ID man's body found near drainage ditch in Katy neighborhood

WEST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The Harris County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Bear Creek Meadows subdivision in Katy Wednesday after a body was found near a drainage ditch.

A man walking on a trail along the fence line of the subdivision found the gruesome scene and called for help around 7:25 a.m.

In the 19600 block of Meadows Court near Cannon Fire Drive, investigators discovered blood, jewelry and other items. Investigators also found an aluminum baseball bat inside of the subdivision next to the fence. The bat appeared to have blood on it.

Officials have identified the deceased as Omar Borrego-Casanova, 31. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

"During the day like this, it is quiet. When it gets dark, it is bad.

When I first moved in, I called police, because they were selling drugs out here, and the police officers actually told me that I was in the wrong neighborhood," neighbor Eric Ferguson said.

Ferguson said the neighborhood is rough, and he wasn’t surprised by the homicide.

Deputies said Borrego-Casanova was found with no pants on and no identification. He was lying on his back with his arms crossed. Detectives said his body showed signs of blunt force trauma.

"We found blood between this location and the bayou, it appears there was a struggle, maybe a fight, but we still undetermined the cause of death," Sgt. Cedrick Collier, from the Harris Co. Sheriff’s Office said. "There was a bat in the area. Anything that possibly could have been used as a weapon will be collected and processed."

The investigation is ongoing.
