Multiple students hospitalized in HISD school bus crash

HOUSTON – Several students were taken to the hospital after a crash involving a Houston Independent School District bus Friday.

According to the Houston Fire Department, nine students were  on the bus at the time of the crash and seven were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The crash happened in the area of Park Place and Galveston Road in southeast Houston. It appeared a vehicle hit the back of the bus.

“I was turning the corner and didn’t see the bus there,” Alexander Jimenez said. “It was stopped in the middle here and usually it stops in front of the tracks. I look up and my car hits it and goes under. The top of my car literally fell apart and smashed in. All I could really was think about the kids. I didn’t care about my health I was just worried if the kids were ok."

“I heard the loud boom,” Michael Whitman, who was walking his daughter to school at the time, said. “Once I heard that, I grabbed her and moved her out of the way. I saw a couple of kids get off of the bus with a neck brace and I know it’s pretty terrifying for the kids, for something to happen like that.”

The students were taken to Bay Shore Hospital and Southeast Hermann Memorial Hospital.

“My daughter is doing ok,” said a parent of one of the students on the bus. “Everyone was taken to the hospital for precautionary measure.”

According to HISD police officers, they will review the video from inside of the bus. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
